I finally got my hands on Bellum and ended up in a mostly empty lobby, so I took the opportunity to walk the entire map without getting shot every five seconds.
No chaos, no shenanigans, just a straight look at the scale, terrain, lighting, and overall design.
And a bit of in the weeds conversation about not only Bellum, but Indie games in general versus AAA game companies, which turned into something bigger than just a “first look.”
Walking this map alone gives you a different perspective on how it’s built and how it might actually play.
And from there, I get into a larger conversation about where games are right now, specifically indie vs AAA.
With tools like Unreal Engine 5, smaller teams are able to focus on one experience and push it hard, while AAA studios are juggling scale, systems, and long-term support.
It’s not just about budget anymore, it’s about focus.
This isn’t a final verdict on Bellum.
This is the start of the conversation.
Next time, I plan on seeing how this map holds up when it’s actually under tomfoolery.
