Hello! And welcome to the Super Mario 3D World Minimal Jump Challenge! This is very similar to pannenkoek's Super Mario 64 A Button Challenge in which he goes through the game pressing the A button as few times as possible. The only difference is that the A button can be held, and A presses to advance menu options or entering levels are not counted. This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 3-1 where I completed the chapter in 7x 2 Presses. You can find the video here: https://youtu.be/_7DTk_XnUoE
Since then, I was able to reroute the game to remove the Boomer swap originally present in this segment. Due to leaving Post Chapter 2 with Boomer, we can play through the entire segment without needing to switch Pixls, saving 2x 2 presses. In addition, I make use of a HBB to climb the first castle. Theres a chance that I could use a second HBB to cross the underground pit, but I would need one more HP than I currently have to pull that strategy off.
Aside from the new discoveries, Chapter 3-1 is quite simple due to its short length. Theres a special case after the underground section where using a convenient hole in 3D allows Mario to bounce off of the soccer shells and, by using careful navigation, allows Mario to clear the hard blocks at the start of the third section. From there, a few bullet bill bounces clear the rest of the level.
This video features a modified view (at 6:17) to help better visualize the home buffer bounces. This modified view edits out the home menus for a more fluid viewing experience.
2 Presses:
1 - To jump across the small, first pit
2 - To jump across the large, underground pit
3 - To jump into the star block
4 - To save the game
Challenge Notes:
This is the Super Paper Mario: 2 Button Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to beat Super Paper Mario while pressing the 2 button as few times as possible. Beating Super Paper Mario requires Mario and the other characters to reach the end credits. Any method is allowed.
What does the 2 button do?
The 2 button does all of the following:
-Jump
-Swim
-Answer a multiple-choice prompt
-Open the quick menu
-Select any item in a menu
-Enter passwords
Things that look like they need the 2 button but can be accomplished with other buttons:
-Progress through dialogue (1 Button)
-Selecting objects with Tippi (A Button)
-Ground pounding with Thudley (1 Button)
-Exiting free fall as Luigi (1 Button)
Each video is only a segment of the larger run and does not consider individual level high scores. This means that the 2 press count for the segment may not be the lowest 2 press count possible if considered in isolation. However, the 2 press count showcased in the video is the lowest 2 press count with the full game in mind. This also means that each video should link seamlessly to the next video chronologically (more or less). Because we are looking at the full game, we also count any save prompts that appear after the chapter is over.

The Low-Cappy addition also limits the number of times we can throw Cappy. Note that A/B Presses are prioritized, meaning we will throw Cappy 100 times to save 1 A/B Presses, but not press A/B 100 times to save one Cappy Throw.
Other Rules:
You must play single player only, with no assist mode. You also must play with the recommended control scheme. (Two vertical joycons)
Q: What is a C Throw
A: A C Throw is short for Cappy Throw. We count a Cappy Throw every time we throw Cappy at something or have to stay in the air for a Cap Jump.
Q: Why A/B Presses?
A: In Mario Odyssey, the jump button is assigned to both A and B, so we use the notation, A/B Presses to account for both buttons at once.
Q: Are there half a presses in this game xdxd
A: Yeah, like Mario 64, a half a press is when you hold A from a previous a press that has not been shown in the video. There are various uses for a half a press that will be demonstrated later.
Q: What does From: mean?
A: Because in Odyssey you dont leave the level when you collect a Power Moon, each video will start where the previous video ended (or the previous video in the route). To avoid confusion, I always put the starting location or moon in the description.")

A: If you let the cutscenes play out, you actually waste more A/B Presses because you need to push the buttons to continue the dialogue.")
