‘Sligging’ the Hay Home
Here is Paddy Kinsella from Clough in north Wexford sharing a word with me on Monday which he used when bringing home the hay in the 1970s by horse.
The word he uses is ‘sligging’ and my good friend Dr. Robbie Sinnott tells me it’s from the Irish ‘Tlig’ or ‘Teilg’ which is to cast or throw. In this case it is probably from the act of throwing a rope or chain around the hay and pulling it home.
Another lovely example of our Irish that survived and if you can focus on the accent of Paddy too. Pure north Wexford and one of my favourite accents in the country.
