I remember less than a year ago when I moved, one of my friends in Amsterdam joked that I was a "sleeper agent". All somebody would need to do is say the magic words and I'd turn into an activated spy... but ever since that idea entered my brain, I've been asking myself which country I'd be spying for.

This is an expression of my growing confusion on how to introduce myself as a new arrival in the Netherlands, as I realize my Russian roots have a far stronger influence on my character and values than I even realized... This is happening as I befriend more and more Russian speakers on the continent. It's an unexpected, yet in hindsight foreseeable, process that is making me more self-aware. But because I grew up in Kentucky USA, a crossroads of Appalachia, the Mid-west, and the South (hence the inclusion of Smoky Mountain Rain), I feel have some experiences that people in Europe will never understand, and vice versa. In a way I am coming to terms with being a "Third Culture Kid." I just hope the magic words don't come too soon.
