In Lukas' second Race Across America (RAAM), Austrian ultra-cyclist Lukas Kaufmann conquered 5,000 km across 13 states, 4 time zones, and 45°C desert heat—the toughest bike race in the world.
This year, Lukas teamed up with g.tec medical engineering for a groundbreaking brain monitoring project. Using our BCI Core 8 and an EEG sleep cap, we tracked his brain activity to test a new recovery strategy: sleep only during deep delta-wave phases and wake up as soon as lighter sleep began, saving valuable race time.
Compared to his first RAAM, Lukas took longer rest periods (up to 3+ hours vs. 1:50 before) and totaled 15h 30m sleep over 10 days. While the approach didn’t improve his time, the EEG data provides powerful insights for future endurance racing and sleep optimization.
