It turns out you don't need the gun at all to skew walk in DK Isles. Go to the beaver near the Fungi Forest cannon, press Z and look up. While you're looking up, press A to surface and release the joystick immediately. As soon as you're on the surface, mash Z to quickly dive underwater again. Finally, mash B to swim through the shore and get hit by the beaver. It's easy enough to get a skew that allows you to enter Aztec lobby, so this is a good backup strategy for beginners.
I should note that if you're too close to the surface, you may end up swimming in the wrong direction. Keep enough distance from DK Island before you set up your angle. Also keep in mind you may have to stop mashing B when the beaver is above you.
If you surface while looking up at an angle of 90 degrees, your angle will be reset within about two seconds. Depending on how early you go underwater again, you will keep part of the angle as you swim through the shore.
