Though Tyagaraja Swami composed primarily for Lord Rama, many of his compositions praise Shiva, Krishna, and Devi. In this beloved, lilting composition, the repetition of Siva becomes a powerful mantra designed to cut through ignorance, quiet restless mental chatter, and lead the heart toward inner strength. Swami asks: will you not chant the sacred name to mitigate the worries of worldly life?

*Meaning:* Will that not destroy the fears and sufferings of worldly life and rebirth?

Kama dula dega kosi / Para bhamala parula dhanamula rosi / Pamaratvamu ede aba vasi / Ati niyamamuto bilvarchanasi
*Meaning:* Cut away lust and base desires, give up longing for others' women and wealth, abandon ignorance, and worship Shiva with bilva leaves in deep discipline.

Sajjana galamula ginchici / Muj-jagadeesvarulani mati nenci / Lajja dula dolaginci / Tana hrj-jalamunanut pojinci
*Meaning:* Seek the company of virtuous people, regard them as forms of the Lord of the three worlds, cast aside false shame, and worship Shiva within the lotus of your heart.

Agamamula nutiyinci / Bahu begulani bhasalu chilinci / Bhagavathulala posinci / Tyagaraja sannutu ani enci
*Meaning:* Praise the sacred scriptures, avoid useless talk, serve devotees of the Lord, and meditate upon Shiva, the One praised by Tyagaraja.

Tyagaraja Swami famously rejected royal gold to maintain his spiritual independence, choosing simplicity on the banks of the Kaveri river. Composing in Telugu—the language of ordinary people—he ensured that sincere devotion was accessible to everyone regardless of status. His practice of ekagrata (one-pointedness) stands as an antidote to our modern era of fragmented attention.
