Experts are calling for a review of rules governing sirens and beacon lights used by emergency vehicles and VIP escorts to ensure traffic priority does not compromise public safety.
They want clear criteria on when the equipment can be activated, who can authorise it and under what circumstances, stressing that rank should not automatically grant priority.
Road safety expert Associate Professor Dr Law Teik Hua said standard procedures should cover speed, lane changes, overtaking and intersections, where escort movements can pose greater risks.
Criminologist Datuk Dr P. Sundramoorthy said priority should be limited to genuine security or operational needs, while Road Safety Council member Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye warned against treating sirens and beacons as a free pass to ignore traffic rules.
The experts stressed that sirens and beacon lights should be treated as safety tools, not symbols of status, with the safety of all road users remaining the priority.
