Former Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court today to three charges of accepting RM1.097 million in bribes to approve foreign worker quotas in 2022.

The 58-year-old MIC deputy president was accused of receiving the funds on three occasions to approve applications for 1,000 foreign worker quotas for TYKB Engineering Sdn Bhd.

The charges, framed under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, carry a maximum 20-year jail term and a fine of not less than five times the bribe amount, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Saravanan, who appeared calm in the dock, entered his plea after the charges were read out before judge Azura Alwi.

He held the ministerial post from March 2020 to November 2022.
