This FLOW-3D WELD keyhole welding simulation showcases the unique post-processing capabilities available with FLOW-3D POST. In this animation, the laser interacts with the base metal with enough energy to create a deep, unstable keyhole which leads to pore formation as it moves along the track. Ray tracing is used in the lower image to visualize the dynamic nature of the melt pool while the temperature is shown above. Simulating the melt pool with a high-fidelity CFD software provides valuable insight into the formation mechanisms of porosity that are difficult to see experimentally.
