Abstract: In this presentation, we will introduce the wehear logger, an ultra-low power acoustic/inertial logger for terrestrial animals. We will highlight how it can benefit behavioural ecologists. We will first describe and position, by highlighting pros and cons, the logger, and more generally acoustic monitoring, within the current landscape of biologging approaches. Then, we will use a series of examples from pilot studies conducted on a diverse set of species to demonstrate the value of the tool. For instance, we will show how the logger can be used to reveal the distribution in space and time of vocalizations (study on plains zebras), detect specific interactions between predators and prey (study on lions), detect disturbances in anthropized landscape (study on wild boars). We will also touch upon some deep-learning based analytical approaches that can be useful to analyze the very large amount of data that the logger collects (study on plains zebras and lions). Finally, we will report on a brief experiment to test whether embarking a deep-learning model would allow reducing power consumption of the logger.
Overall, we hope to use this presentation to stimulate the discussion around the use of acoustic bio-loggers on terrestrial animals, which could not only improve or facilitate current studies, but also allow completely novel studies in the wild.
