Talking about the graphic novel Silver Surfer (The Ultimate Cosmic Experience) from 1978.
The Silver Surfer is a character created by writer-artist Jack Kirby and scripted by writer-editor Stan Lee in the pages of Fantastic Four #48 (during the “Galactus Trilogy”) from December 1965 (cover dated March 1966).Kirby’s original version of the Surfer was a being of energy formed by the planet eater Galactus.
He was supposed to learn how to be human and protect humanity after meeting the blind sculptress Alicia Masters. Lee became enamored with the character and changed the origin in 1968 when he started a new Silver Surfer series with artist John Buscema.
By that time, Kirby was frustrated and wanted more control and credit for his stories. The Lee and Buscema run introduced Zenn-La, Shalla-Bal and the Surfer’s alter ego, Norrin Radd. Radd sacrificed himself to Galactus so the planet eater would spare his planet.
Kirby went to DC in 1970 to do his Fourth World books. He returned to Marvel in 1975 to do crazy concepts with Captain America, Black Panther, The Eternals, Machine Man, Devil Dinosaur, 2001 and a Silver Surfer project. He reunited with his Fantastic Four collaborators Lee and Joe Sinnott with letterer John Costanza and colorist Glynis Wein for a graphic novel in 1978. His longest work so far.
The book has the Surfer’s first introduction with Earth as he tries to get Galactus to spare the planet. This book also introduces a new character named Ardina. Featuring a cover painted by Earl Norem.
While this book reunited Kirby and Lee, it also broke their partnership for the last time. Kirby left comics for animation. However, there were plans for a Silver Surfer movie planned for 1980 by producer Lee Kramer (starring bodybuilder Frank Zane and Olivia Newton John).
