"Oscillations” by Silver Apples is a groundbreaking 1968 proto-electronic track that helped lay the foundation for synthpop, industrial, and experimental electronic music decades later.
Built around Simeon Coxe’s homemade oscillator-based instrument and hypnotic rhythmic repetition, “Oscillations” sounds astonishingly modern for its time. Released at the height of the psychedelic rock era, the track stood apart — mechanical, minimalist, and defiantly forward-thinking. Its pulsing electronic tones and mantra-like structure would later echo through krautrock, minimal synth, post-punk, and early 1980s electronic movements.
Long before drum machines and digital production became standard, Silver Apples were wiring oscillators by hand and performing electronic music live. “Oscillations” remains one of the earliest examples of rock music fully driven by electronic instrumentation — a true origin point for the circuitry that would follow.
