SILAGE QUALITY STARTS WITH COMPACTION
In this video, I toured a silage pit and one lesson stood out clearly:
good silage is not about how much you harvest, but how well you compact.
Many farmers in the Philippines underestimate the value of proper compaction. But without tight packing, air remains trapped inside the pile. And where there is air, there is spoilage.
Proper compaction:
• Removes oxygen
• Allows good fermentation
• Preserves nutrients and energy
• Prevents molds and heating
No matter how good the forage is, poor compaction will destroy its value.
Silage is stored feed for the future. If we are disciplined during filling, we are rewarded during feeding. If we rush or cut corners, we pay for it later through waste, low intake, and poor animal performance.
This is not about expensive equipment.
It is about time, weight, layering, and patience.
