Sigur Rós - Ágætis byrjun (1998 Demo) - This early cassette demo is more fragile and in many ways more beautiful than the final title track on Sigur Rós’s breakthrough album. The voice is airier, sweeter and less dry, with whole sections of later abandoned backing vocals in play. Kjartan’s piano is absent at least in the early stages - the melody picked up by Jónsi’s acoustic guitar - with room for Georg’s languid bass and Águst’s simple snare to propel the song forward...or more accurately upwards. Jónsi’s voice is at its most weightless and heavenly; the piano when it arrives like sunlight reflecting off the sea; the whole the aural equivalent of the drowsy content you feel after falling asleep in the sun, not a care in the world. Rescued from a solitary cassette, this version includes historical digital glitches which have been left in - think of it as the patina on a thing of cherished beauty that was very nearly lost.

We strike land at some wee harbour at the bottom of this sticky out bit of Iceland and immediately set off through some of the most amazing landscape many of us have ever seen (including the Icelanders) on our way to Selárdalur, remotely sited in the very west of the West Fjords. Selárdalur is nationally renowned for a folly-ish collection of buildings built by Samuel Jonsson in the middle of last century that ape the churches and homesteads of Iceland only in about 2/3rds scale.
It’s a little bit like a crumbling film set and reminds me of visiting the “Mexican” towns of Almeria in southern Spain where they filmed the spaghetti westerns. It is here we have chosen to film the band performing ‘Heysatan’ in the company of the brass section, who have un-poetically come to be known as the Horny Brasstards.. - John Best")
