liminal is much more than an ambient sigur rós mixtape curated by jónsi, alex somers and paul corley. liminal views sigur rós as an eco-system. it identifies the connections and blurs the boundaries between work done and work to come; between brand new music and ideas barely yet nascent; between songs written 20 years ago and collaborations to be made tomorrow.
in bringing together these collaborations and commissions – for choreographers, visual artists and new technologies – with solo work and remixes, film score and generative music, as well as the work of close friends and associates in the wider sigur rós ‘family’, liminal aims to take the listener to a hinterland, to the threshold of a place neither nor there; a “liminal” space. liminal will live on digital services as an ‘endless’ playlist, which means it will be built over linear time into a never-finished project of ceaseless invention.

We strike land at some wee harbour at the bottom of this sticky out bit of Iceland and immediately set off through some of the most amazing landscape many of us have ever seen (including the Icelanders) on our way to Selárdalur, remotely sited in the very west of the West Fjords. Selárdalur is nationally renowned for a folly-ish collection of buildings built by Samuel Jonsson in the middle of last century that ape the churches and homesteads of Iceland only in about 2/3rds scale.
It’s a little bit like a crumbling film set and reminds me of visiting the “Mexican” towns of Almeria in southern Spain where they filmed the spaghetti westerns. It is here we have chosen to film the band performing ‘Heysatan’ in the company of the brass section, who have un-poetically come to be known as the Horny Brasstards.. - John Best")

Late morning. Drive from Reykjavík in the company of our piano tuner, Diddi, to join the band in Djúpavík out on the far Western end of the Snæfellsnes peninsula about a quarter of the way clockwise round the country. The day is clear and cloudless, exactly as we might have hoped against hope we would have in this especially lousy Icelandic summer.
So good, in fact, is the weather that I feel paradoxically gloomy at the notion that it
can’t possibly last through the next two weeks of shooting this first ever film of Sigur
Rós live. Still, as we leave the city you can clearly see the Snæfell glacier glinting
on the horizon some hundred and twenty odd miles away. - John Best")
