Started in the early 1980s, the Shuttle Student Involvement Program (later called the NASA Student Involvement Program) was designed to help students learn science by doing science. Students designed experiments and submitted them to NASA. NASA would then fly the experiments they accepted, whether on a Space Shuttle flight or on a sounding rocket.
