Lasik is approved for ages 18 and older. There really isn't an age limit for Lasik, but often it is not recommended for those over the age of 45. Why is that? Usually when people reach the 40's, people start experiencing presbyopia. This is the gradual decrease in the eye's ability to focus at near. This is due to the loss in flexibility of the crystalline lens. Lasik corrects the distance prescription by reshaping the cornea with an excimer laser, but the crystalline lens still has the issue of focusing up close. For that reason, doctors might recommend a monovision type of correction with Lasik or even an ICL. Another recommendation would be a refractive lens exchange, which removes the crystalline lens, and replaces it was an artificial lens called an IntraOcular Lens (IOL). This type of lens can be made to correct distance, astigmatism, or even near vision with either monovision or with a multifocal type of IOL.
