Pregnant women should get a COVID-19 vaccine. Dartmouth Health Doctor and Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist, Jennifer A. McCoy, MD, says the COVID vaccine is actually very important. That's because COVID-19 is still spreading in our communities and the vaccine is 85–95% effective at preventing severe illness and can help protect your baby, too. Pregnant people are also more likely to get seriously ill from COVID-19 and getting severe COVID during pregnancy can increase other complications, such as preterm birth and stillbirth. Once more, large studies have shown no evidence of risks or safety concerns when you get the vaccine and are a pregnant person. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine also both recommend COVID-19 vaccination for all people planning pregnancy, as well as anyone who is pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding.
