Would you teach your children unsafe and unhealthy practices within this wonderful family hobby? Melting toxic foam in your work environment is not safer or less risky than using a knife. In fact, melting foam at any level is proven to cause irreversible lung damage that rears it's ugly head later in life.

Learn to use safe and appropriate tools if you want to reduce risk as there is always some risk in a hobby.

If you are using a hot wire to melt foam on your model railroad you are doing it wrong. There is nothing more lethal than the gas that forms when you melt foam in this hobby. The safe way is to cut it with a knife or saw which reduces the chance of any inhalation of toxic dust or gas which will negatively affect your health in the long term.
