SHOTGUN
Lyrics and Music by Glen Clark

For the last couple of years my friend and colleague has been challenging me to record a 'rock song'. Well, I'm not sure if this is it or not but it's certainly my best attempt at one.

Inspired by the Song Spark monthly challenge to write a sequel (or prequel) to one of your own songs.

A couple of months ago I posted a song called 'Drowning' which tells the tragic story of lovers torn apart. 'Shotgun' takes place not long before before that song and picks up the story as our protagonist is discovered in his Lover's room by her disapproving Father.

Recording-wise, this song has about 20 tracks all recorded, mixed and mastered in Garageband on MacOS.

2 auto-drummer tracks (Zak & Kyle) both playing the So Cal kit. Zak plays the Choruses and Kyle plays the Verses and Instrumentals.

1 Bass guitar track

2 rhythm guitar tracks doubled and played on my modified Fender Squier Telecaster. I used a blend of the Stadium Spread and Double Driven Amp settings.

4 Lead guitar tracks (the Fender again) also doubled to add some thickness. I used the Stadium Spread amp setting again.

2 synth tracks (one pad playing sustained chords and the other an arpeggiator synth).

Vocally there is one Master vocal track.

I then added a vocal reverse reverb track underneath the verses. I did this by copying the Master Vocal track into another separate GB project, reversing the wave form and adding reverb. I then exported that file as an AIFF and brought it back into my main project where I reversed it again and lined it up with my original vocal track.

Also underpinning the master vocal in the verses is another vocal track which was sung an octave lower.

There are also just 4 backing vocal tracks (that's hardly any compared to what I normally do LOL).

The final track is a single note played on the So Cal drum kit hitting about 4 drums at once to create the sound of a shotgun blast. I added a guitar pedalboard to the track with some overdrive, distortion and phase to break up the sound a bit.

All stock standard GB plugins used except for my favourite Kazrog True Iron Transistor emulator.

Chords are really really basic. In fact it's just a 4 chord song.
Verse: C sharp minor A E B
Chorus: A E B
Instrumentals are the same as the Verse chords but played with a slightly different timing.

I'm planning on doing a breakdown video at some stage because there are a few wee techniques I used which may be of interest to some people.

Video was made in iMovie. The main images are a screen capture from the Staella App (Music visualiser) on my iPad. Then it was just a case of adding the lyrics.

I'm not sure if this does actually 'rock' or not but I had a lot of fun doing it. Hope you enjoy and thanks for listening.
