MY CHALK PASTEL TIPS AND TRICKS!

I’ve been sharing some lessons lately where chalk is used and I’ve gotten some great questions….so I thought I would answer them here!

❤️ How to you distribute chalk?

I distribute it between two students with the chalk separated warm/cool.

❤️Why do you remove the neutral colors?

Because they are not on the color wheel and, when blended with the warm and cool colors, can dim their bright color. Neutral colors are kept in a separate container for student use.

❤️ It’s so dusty and messy! How do you handle that?!

We color jn a “scratchy and patchy” way so that we aren’t adding TOO much chalk. It’s not like a crayon where you use full coverage. We use ONE FINGER to blend the colors; only blending two colors together at a time.

❤️How do you keep fingers clean?

We only use one finger for blending and wipe it clean with a tissue before blending more colors.

❤️ The artwork looks muddy! How do the artists keep it looking bright?

Introduce the color wheel! Tell the artists about analogous colors (colors beside one another on the color wheel) and only allow three analogous colors in one space. If that is too difficult for comprehension, tell students to only use warm or cool colors in a space. Limit it to 3.

❤️What fixative should I use?

Dollar store aerosol hairspray works as well as the expensive art store fixatives. BUT…artwork can still smear! Artists need to know that once it’s finished, no touching.

❤️ I have chalk but it’s all dirty and students don’t like using it!

Clean it! Throw all your chalk in a bag with dry rice and shake it like crazy. It will become clean-ish! Then separate warm and cool and that will also help it stay clean.
