Our Hawai'i research team recently collected this underwater video of short-finned pilot whales while doing dolphin surveys in Maui Nui. In this video, you can see a mother and calf swimming close to our research vessel, Ocean Protector.
Identifying known mothers like this one within this population helps our researchers better understand the reproductive rates of these animals. Knowing this allows us to see how various threats can impact reproduction and the population!
