Entering service with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1960s, the "Light, Target, Surveying, Self-Illuminated, With Carrying Case, For Use With Range Pole" was designed for setting up artillery batteries and conducting other triangular surveying work in low-visibility conditions. Though largely superseded by laser and GPS-based systems, such analog technologies are still carried by artillery batteries for backup purposes.
