SHIRLEY VIVIAN TERESA BRITTAIN (BARONESS WILLIAMS OF CROSBY) - British politician and academic. Originally a Labour Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister in the 1970s, Mrs Williams was one of the "Gang of Four" rebels who founded the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1981. Between 2001 and 2004, as Baroness Williams, she served as Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lord. Also Professor Emerita of Electoral Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Born in chelsea, Shirley Williams was the daughter of philosopher Sir George Catlin and the feminist writer Vera Brittain.
