Shiny Mewtwo statistically arrives after quite a lot of time! I never really saw myself doing a Gen 1 hunt a year or two ago but I decided that with my 100th in mind, I’d bite the bullet & try it out. I’ll complain about this style of hunting in a sec’, first of all; This is my 100th live shiny special and there will be many more to come, don’t worry. I really like how it looks in Gen 2 and it’s for sure a super rare thing to claim. I decided to revisit the original game that I started with in Yellow for the ultimate prize in that game. I literally couldn’t be happier with this. It took a while but I’m delighted with the outcome. What a prize.

Okay, so this style of hunting let me talk about it for a second. If you didn’t know, Gen 1 can generate shinies based on the stats/DVs that a Pokémon has when sending it to either Gen 2 or Gen 7 as I explain in this video. Essentially what this entitles is you resetting the game until you get a specific spread of stats for any given Pokémon (Only Gift, Safari, Glitch and Fishing can be shiny iirc). This for me at least was just boring and it’s honestly something that I don’t think I’ll be doing again. You’re not looking for sparkles, but stats. It’s really not for me in the long term but I’m glad I can say I’ve done at least one hunt in Gen 1. I much, much prefer the sprite appearing shiny in front of me but to each their own, I guess. I respect everyone and anyone who can do this consistently.

The chance of the shiny is interestingly still a 1/8192 chance if you’re curious and as I result, I decided not to send this upwards to Gen 7 where Mewtwo is huntable with a base 1/4096 chance. I do not wish to devalue it.

All in all, do I recommend Gen 1 hunting? Not really. I’d honestly say only do it if you have a special affinity for Gen 1 or 2 and you appreciate how rare shiny legendaries are in Gen 2 where they are not even available without a Gen 1 trade. That said, give it a try & see what you think. I am but a simple individual with an opinion that may differ from yours.

This hunt was partly inspired by the announcement of the Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution movie. I rewatched the first movie and thought, it's time to get a Mewtwo in the original games.
