A Shield backflip is one that can be performed by getting shield recoil rather than having Z held.

How to do a shield backflip:
- Place down a bomb and hold R
- Once the explosion has made contact with the shield, let go of R
- Buffer until the frame before link stands up
- Unpause and hold back + A (+ R if you want to remain shielding)

Note that this can be done out of damage ISG which means you can do hovers without holding Z:

Doing damage ISG with the above steps, and holding R in the backflip. If you keep holding R once you've done a hover, he will attempt to crouch and you'll instantly fall from the hover. Instead, you can let go of R when the explosion makes contact with the shield to stay in the hover.

You can chain shield backflips into multiple hovers, which I show here to do the ranch early without holding Z

For each hover I have to let go of R when the shield makes contact with the explosion and then repress it on the frame I can backflip on.
