The M4A3 Sherman tank “Barracuda,” displayed in Bastogne Square, is an authentic veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. On December 30, 1944, the tank took part in an Allied attack against the southern flank of the German offensive in the Ardennes. Unbeknownst to its crew, German forces had already seized the village of Renuamont, the tank's objective, and were preparing a counterattack in the same area.
As Barracuda advanced toward the village, it entered territory already occupied by German troops. While attempting to withdraw, the tank became bogged down in deep snow and soft ground near a pond. Immobilized and vulnerable, it was struck by a Panzerfaust in the rear and then hit in the side by a 75 mm round fired from a German Panzer IV tank.
Although the crew managed to escape the disabled vehicle, one crewman was killed, while the others were captured and taken prisoner. Following the war, Barracuda was recovered and placed on display in Bastogne's McAuliffe Square in 1946. In 1948, the tank became a permanent memorial and shrine honoring the soldiers who fought and sacrificed during the Battle of the Bulge.
