During World War I, fighting around Verdun in 1916 many small villages were in the middle of the battle. One such village was Fleury-devant-Douaumont. The village was captured and recaptured 16 times by the armies fighting near Verdun. The village was completely destroyed and never rebuilt officially becoming a “Dead Village” of World War I. The surrounding terrain still bares the scares of battle and contains unexploded ordnance from the battle. Former homes and shops are marked by commemorative stone monuments and small plaques and there is a monument to the village.
