I conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle observed swerving and stopping inappropriately at a green light. Upon contact, I immediately detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage and noticed fresh vomit streaked on the side of the vehicle. Based on the driving behavior and physical indicators, I requested the driver to step out for SFSTs. The driver was immediately resistant and refused to perform any tests, leading to his arrest for OVI. During the stop, I realized the driver was a high-ranking elected official (a Sheriff). After transport, the driver refused to submit to the chemical test required by Ohio implied consent law.
