The Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, WV is the place to go to see Shay locomotives in operation. These geared steam locomotives were designed for logging operations and the like. They're slow but powerful.
This video shows Shays No. 2, 5 and big No. 6 in operation. "Big 6" is unique, built for mainline railroad operation, and is far larger than any other Shay locomotive.
In this video, I have focused on the men who run and maintain these machines. Without sealed roller bearings, central lubrication or long-distance fuel tanks, these locomotives require a lot of oiling, greasing and watering.
