European Brown Bear enjoying a drink with me at the Hungarian Bear/Wolf sanctuary in Veresegyhaz Hungary. The facility is 1 hour outside Budapest. It wasn't a beer I gave him; just read better than 'softdrink'.
The one bear that approached me was hoping for food but I did not have any so we just hung-out for awhile. I remembered I had a drink in my hand and decided to give him the rest. Definitely experienced at begging; pleasant and proper. A very tamed, calm, and humanized bear; trusting me (who it never met before) rather than his GIANT Brother Bear that passed by.
He exibits some bear self awarness I think, as he measures up his big body; checking himself out on both sides before laying down in front of the electric fence.
They encourage people to feed the bears using long wooden spoons of fruit or honey. The large enclosure allows them to decide if they want to approach or not.
The history of many of these bears is a tragic one; kept as pets in small enclosures, part of dying circuses, abused, or neglected. Here they have a lake, grasses, trees, and homemade hibernation dens and fed regular meals.
