I think it's interesting and funny what trends these days. Ever since the news about bad people doing bad things and getting videotaped about it, it's created its own entertainment on the web called "Thug Life". Mostly about people doing real, but bad things and making a mockery about it. Now there is an Animal Thug life going viral and growing in popularity. Here is my 1st attempt at showcasing one such case.
Thought I would post some interesting behavior I captured when volunteering at a Cheetah breeding center this year and set it to Thug Life themes. The behavior is real and unrehearsed; of course. As in most predators, Cheetahs become territorial and this is an example of that behavior. Two female Cheetahs are separated by a fence and don't like each other which ends up in aggressive displays between enclosures.
The approaching Cheetah is Fiela; a retired ambassador at Cheetah Experience and does not like people, except for her owner and a few other woman. I was told that she particularly does not like men. She was raised and surrounded by women growing up as a cub and spent most of her adult life around woman. She is about 9 years old in this clip. I was lucky to have her even close to me, much less pet her, and not have her slap me too.
I imagine there is also a history behind these two Cheetahs disdain for each other. One inside the fence was suspected of being pregnant and hormonal scents coming from her would certainly bring about more tension between them. But as you see, both are ok with me.
Fiela comes creeping over and interrupts my groom session with Zena, then lunges towards her and scares the crap out of me. Like I mentioned, she does not like people and hates men so I was little nervous to begin with. I was kneeling down and completely vulnerable. When Fiela swats her paw and strikes at Zena, I had trouble holding the camera still from jumping again.
I was impressed with Zena's boldness in standing her ground and edging closer to Fiela's face; daring her to do something. They both understand the protection of the fence, but anyone would flinch from a Cheetah swatting in your direction. I also thought it funny they both close their eyes when striking and defending.
Understandably, Zena lost the mood in wanting any more scratching. The friendly groom session was over.
