Shared Irish/Newfoundland Naming Traditions (Recalled by 97 Year Old Sadie Nash from Branch, Newfoundland)
I am only sitting down this morning to edit up this interview with the then 90 year old Sadie Nash. I'm going to share this 1 minute clip, as aside from the retained Irish accents and mannerisms in Newfoundland, the older communities also had the same naming practices.
Some of you will know this well, but in the past (and still the case in come communities) if you had so many women with the same first and second names ie Mary Murphy, you'd be given your husbands or fathers/mothers first name to distinguish you from the other Marys. ie Pat's Mary, Nan's Mary etc. In this short chat - Sadie tells me how they did and asks me if we did in Ireland too. Gorgeous.
