Casa Grama — Studio Arthur Casas Explains the Architecture Behind the Project
Set within Fazenda da Grama in Itupeva, São Paulo, Casa Grama is a 1,800-square-meter family residence designed by Studio Arthur Casas. Completed in 2025, the project responds directly to its gently sloping corner site, unfolding horizontally across the landscape through interlocking volumes, split levels, generous overhangs, and carefully framed openings.
In this film, the architectural journey is accompanied by an in-depth conversation with Arthur Casas and Nara, the project's director at Studio Arthur Casas, offering a closer look at the thinking behind the house. Through their perspectives, we discover how the site's topography, open views, natural light, ventilation, structure, and relationship with the landscape informed some of the project's most defining decisions.
At the center of the architecture is an extraordinary 11-meter cantilever containing the office, suspended above the main entrance and forming the porte-cochère below. Supported by steel trusses, this dramatic gesture combines structural precision with a sense of lightness, becoming one of the defining elements of the residence.
Throughout the house, rough stone, plaster, metal, Accoya wood, and European oak establish continuity between interior and exterior, while motorized brise-soleils, cross ventilation, photovoltaic panels, and natural-light strategies reinforce its environmental approach. The interiors extend the architectural language through furniture by Arthur Casas alongside important pieces of Brazilian design by Sérgio Rodrigues, Jorge Zalszupin, and Carlos Milan.
Blending the interviews with a poetic and cinematic journey through the house, the film allows us to experience Casa Grama while hearing directly from the architects who conceived it. Moving through its dramatic cantilevers, shifting levels, changing light, materials, and open relationship with the landscape, we discover not only the finished architecture, but the ideas and decisions that shaped it.
