REVIEW (Part 3 - Continued from last video description) -
Now don’t get me wrong, they made these bonus levels as interesting as possible and added tons of new moves to mechanics with a crazy amount going on. Like more than every other modern take on Pacman combined. Such as, pushing blocks towards the ghosts, using turbo boosters which jet you all over the room, fighting mega ghost bosses and strict time limit, plus many more. There are 4-5 phases where you need to beat a certain number of ghosts before you can collect the fruit to move onto the next phase. The last 2 phases are the boss battle. The music is also lively, bouncy electronic dance music that really stands out compared to the rest of the game. These maze sections are made with love and respect and should be the best part of the game, but they fail to hit the mark.
First of all, the difficulty. The time is extremely tight on every level. Maybe a speed runners dream, but not for a regular player, and not for someone that is into Metroidvanias and not arcades. I had to do these runs multiple times before I could beat the time. The phases can drag on for ages and I do not enjoy playing them more than once. But you have to. When you finally manage to beat a maze, it is a relief more than anything because you know you don’t have to do it again. When you hit the finishing screen, you are given a Ghost item. I had no idea what these were but I just thought I needed to collect them for something good later. There is a score bar that goes up and usually it never goes above half way. At the end of the score bar, shows another item which can be obtained. This means I never got a score anywhere near enough for this second item that I also had no idea what it did. It turned out, it was to be able to buy an auto counter upgrade, but only when you got all 12 of them for each maze. Absolutely no way I want to do that. To be able to do that, I think you would need to beat the maze with at least 20 seconds spare after defeating the boss so you can collect bonus fruit which are given at the end if you have some time left. I tried it on the first level and I thought that one was impossible.
There are also some bad UI choices too. When they introduce a new mechanic in the Maze, you are given a full screen tutorial. Fair enough, the first time. But every time, you play the maze, it will give you the instruction. So, if you play the maze 20 times in a row, you will see the instructions 20 times in a row.. The first maze is particularly full of instructions so it seems insane to show so many. Baffling game design. The other weird UI trick is that when you run out of time (which is most of the time), you get the message “Do you want to continue from the very beginning?” You select ‘yes’ and get sent to back to Phase 3, instead of phase 1. This might be OK sometimes but it takes your time left from the initial first 2 phases which are usually your first attempt so pretty bad. It took me a while to realise I was just doing the last 2 phases over and over when it wasn’t even possible with the low amount of time I had left.
