Review (part 3/3 - continued from previous video description) –
A lot of the items aren’t clear by what they mean either due to words which aren’t sufficiently explained. Such as increasing your breath or mana points. I didn’t know what they did. In fact, this game is just a big mess of confusion. Granted they are taking it from the Dark- souls playbook, but I didn’t like that either. I get not hand holding but I was stuck so many times just because of bad design or the mechanics not explained to me properly. I got to one boss that was giving me intense trouble. I asked AI about it, and it told me I wasn’t ready to fight that as it is a DLC boss and one of the hardest. I had no idea, because it seemed like I was in a normal area and this was a progression boss.
The other things that wasted a lot of me time was at a point where a main character tells me do a quest for him so he can unblock my path to the right of him. I beat the boss he requested and he said I wasn’t done and I needed to beat another boss and marked it at the bottom of my map. I explored as much as I could and realised I needed to get a new ability if I was to go any further, so I explored the whole game again and found nothing. I went back to the character and walked to the right. Turned out he had unblocked the passage after I defeated the boss in the first part of the quest. The lack of information like this can lead to hours of wasted time.
The game also punishes you for not being good enough. The way the XP system works is that you get a combo builder for staying alive longer and killing more enemies. So, you get a higher percentage of XP the longer you stay alive. So, if you die all the time, like I did, you get hardly any XP to spend on the health you need because you keep dying. If you don’t keep dying, the game will be easier for you. It’s a stupid system which does the opposite. The weaker player will be forced to grind to catch up.
There are also some bugs in the game in the EPIC games PC version at least. I’ve been stuck in a jumping animation on a rock – fortunately the game saves at your exact place when you quit out. But I have had some crashes where an oval light appears at the top right of the screen before happening. I only had it twice before 20 hours in, and then it was happening every time I started a game. In the end, after much troubleshooting, lowering the graphical settings fixed it, but it makes no sense because its not a highly graphical game and my computer is definitely capable and provably so after 20 hours. It also removed my save on one boot which terrified me, but after rebooting, thankfully, it came back.
Another bug is that when you get the Pull ability that you use the right stick, it doesn’t work on the controller. I had to find a trick on the internet where you have to press ALT+TAB to exit back to windows and come back. I have to do this every time I start the game. You would think this awful bug would be fixed after 4-5 years of release.
This isn’t a bad game but the 25 hours I played dragged on and it’s one of the worst Metroidvanias I have ever played due to taking the Soul-like moniker too literally. It’s too much of it and it doesn’t work as well in 2D. It’s definitely the hardest Metroidvania I’ve played and harder than any proper Soul-Bourne game.
