Review – This is a souls-like Metroidvania – meaning it is rock hard. I played this off the back of completing Blasphemous which is renowned for being rock hard, so I was expecting something more soothing with this. I was wrong. It’s just as hard, or maybe slightly harder. In fact, the difficulty can be all over the place. The bosses are generally hard, and do take a lot of time to beat. More often than not, they have 3 phases in which it takes a good while to chip off their energy to get to the hard phase, in which case the attack patterns are more extreme and take a few attempts to learn. All the while having to redo the first 2 phases over and over. There is a particularly tough boss ¾ through the game that seems impossible at first because of the little damage you can do it. But it is vital that you do it to get an ability to proceed through the game. It took me well over an hour and I had collected all I could possibly collect at that point. But then the last boss of the game only took a few tries. It was pretty easy relatively speaking.
But then again, it matters what weapons you use. You are given lots of different weapons throughout but can only equip two sets of three. At the first half of the game, it doesn’t really matter because most of the weapons are useless. But later on, they can be very strategic. Although you could have wasted all the upgrade points on bad weapons and ruin the game for yourself because there are a finite number of upgrade points in the game. You can’t upgrade all the weapons to full. Not even half of them. Some of the weapons are great and can make a difference in boss fights. But most of them are rubbish and I ignored them after trying them once.
The gameplay is exactly what you would expect from a Metroidvania. Typical sword attacks, with typical upgrades allowing progression, such as double jump, Hookshot, and wall jumps.
This game definitely focuses more on combat than platforming. There are no particularly difficult platform challenges which is odd for a modern game of this type.
Story-wise, I have no clue what was going on. Typical talk of blight and other dark themes as in all soul-likes. But I’m not here for the story.
The exploration is a key part of these types of games and I love how this game respects the players time by giving lots of save points, and making each save point a fast travel point. You can also warp back to the last save point at any time, without losing anything. The map also tells you if you have collected everything in a room and if there are any exits that you missed. I really appreciate that. It’s even more appreciated because I couldn’t find a specific room guide online for a couple of things. I was forced to find almost everything on my own, with the help of AI for a couple of rooms. There are some very well-hidden objects.
This may be a souls-like, but really its down the style and difficulty. Thankfully it doesn’t do that BS thing where you lose all your XP upon death and are forced to go back to the same spot to collect them.
This is an extremely typical Metroidvania. It’s a very good game, but it does nothing that stands out. It took me 20 hours to 100% and Platinum the game so it doesn’t outstay its welcome. I’m glad I played this and I was horrendously addicted to it. I had to drop everything and nail the 20 hours in 3 days. Which made me way behind in my work. But I don’t regret it because I loved it. Although I can imagine that in a couple of years, I won’t remember anything about it.
