This week I made a dress after a 1939 pattern. After sewing costumes and historical fashion for so long, I am branching out to the realm of vintage clothing. For this project I used the antique Singer again, and it works like a dream!
As the dress progressed, I found the fabric a bit unsuitable, so after this I'm making a second one in another fabric. It's a bit more heavy and a beautiful golden-green colour, I can't wait to start it. Realising that I might not get a lot of wear out of this dress did make my work a bit less tidy. I hope you enjoy this video anyway!

My friend Fanny and I were very inspired by the early 1900s reform- and artistic dress movements, and both wanted to make a garment in this style. We found out that there is a contemporary pattern that makes it very easy to do so, and thought it would be the perfect historical sewing/ history bounding/ quarantine loungewear project for a sewing challenge. Hence, #ReformDressChallenge was born!

I recently took up bobbin lace, and decided to restore my antique bobbin lace roll pillow. Watch me blunder through making it pretty again! (Disclaimer: do not watch if you are a professional repairperson of antique things, it will probably hurt.)

Materials I used:
-Sturdy white cotton sateen
-White linen
-Cotton quilt batting
-Seagrass (from a flower arranging supply store)
-Small nails
-Extra strong and regular sewing thread
-Regular white wood glue
-Pieces of lacing for gathering

I am using pattern instructions from 1912 by Marie Thierbach, and adding my own touch with decorations and embroidery in the spirit of arts and crafts. I’m excited to work on this project together with my friend Fanny, who came up with the idea in the first place. I highly encourage you to check out her progress pictures on instagram! It is also an absolute joy reading and learning about the Dress Reform movement and the Artistic and Aesthetic dress, and seeing other people’s concepts and projects with the #ReformDressChallenge hashtag.
