Understanding and applying the modes is a huge topic. There are several ways to go about it. In this video, I show how knowing one major scale pattern can give you all seven modes by starting on a different scale tone.
When thinking of the modes, you can access them by thinking of the parent major scale they are derived from or memorize and understand their formulas. I recommend both.
Practice the modes by using a loop pedal or backing tracks on YouTube. You can also practice all of your major modes starting from one root and then all of your minor modes starting on one root to hear their distinct differences.
