Introducing ... Sesame Snaps: Michaela Cisarikova Dance Company
We spent the day with MCDC at Creative Folkestone Quarterhouse observing their research into the themes of Fish Out Of Water.
My name is Michaela Cisarikova. I was born in small town in Slovakia and in 2009 I came to the UK to study dance at University Centre of Folkestone part of Canterbury Christ Church University to follow my passion for dance & choreography.
My most recent project I started to create and plan is an outdoor work “Fish Out Of Water” (FOW). I am looking to respond to the theme of “FOW” which covers themes of identity, belonging, migration and displacement which I close to me, being immigrant myself. “Fish out of water” for me means being different and out of my natural surroundings, something that I feel will resonate strongly with some of the local & wider community.
This seed funding is a great kick-starter to use the space at the Quarterhouse to explore work without the pressure of a final product. This pot of money will be used to find a local collaborator, expand my network in the area and start building relationships beyond this project. This money will also secure further planning and the opportunity to begin researching movement material and stories from local Roma people and what “fish out of water” means to them.
I believe dance is a connection to the human soul. My mission is to challenge creativity; explore and bring contemporary and hip-hop dance to people & unconventional spaces and to build relationships and memorable experiences through dance.

Open Sesame Seed offers seed funding to artists and creatives living and working in East Kent. The funding is open to artists and creatives working in the performing arts including theatre, dance, music, sound, circus, comedy, spoken word, film and live art. It is offered alongside time in Folkestone Quarterhouse auditorium with technical support if required.
We caught up with the Seed Fund recipients to see how they’ve been getting on.
