0:00 part 1 using Google Earth Pro to show the spatial relationships between a viewing location of Santa Barbara, CA and the subsolar and sublunar locations at the time of maximum lunar eclipse in September 2024.

0:58 part 2 using Stellarium to show the view of the moon eclipsed by Earth from the perspective of the area on the Sun with the greatest exposure to the moon at maximum eclipse. This scene is rotated so that the location of Santa Barbara is oriented at the top of the globe Earth.

The portion of the moon not visible from the sun is where earth’s umbra appears when viewed from earth.

This explains why, when viewed from Santa Barbara, the moon 8 degrees elevation with the set sun 10 degrees below the horizon, has the umbral shadow appear along the upper left of the lunar limb.
