Seowon are Neo-Confucian academies, basically a sort of religious school for Confucians, and it makes for a very interesting UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Korea. Although there were once hundreds of Seowon dotted across Korea, many of them have been lost to time. This entry on the World Heritage List covers nine Seowon Neo-Confucian academies, all of which are in great condition. For our visit, we focused on one of the best: Byeongsan Seowon located near Andong in the north-east of South Korea. Let's go!
