Stories of mermaids and other sea beings that are fish-like or amphibious in nature are quite commonplace. But legends of Scotland, Ireland, the Orkneys and Faeroe Islands have sea beings who shift between human and seal form! The Selkies are a mysterious lot, just as likely to rescue a person from drowning as they are to cause a person to drown. Most stories featuring them involve a human seeing them, becoming infatuated and trying to keep the Selkie forever, but the spirit of a Selkie can never be fully caged....
