The complete soundtrack from Secret of Mana for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
Released in 1993, Secret of Mana was developed and published by Square. The game’s soundtrack was composed by Hiroki Kikuta, whose music gave the adventure a very different identity from many other Square RPGs of the era. Rather than relying mainly on orchestral-style melodies, the score mixes atmospheric synths, unusual percussion, bright melodic themes and more experimental textures.
Secret of Mana follows Randi, Primm and Popoi as they travel across a large fantasy world in an attempt to restore the power of the Mana Sword and stop the Mana Fortress. The soundtrack mirrors that journey closely, moving between peaceful village music, mysterious forests, deserts, nighttime environments, dramatic story scenes and increasingly intense battle themes.
“Fear of the Heavens” opens the soundtrack with a mysterious and almost dreamlike atmosphere, while “Into the Thick of It” became one of the game’s most recognizable exploration themes. Tracks such as “The Color of the Summer Sky,” “Dancing Animals,” “What the Forest Taught Me” and “Did You See the Ocean?” give different areas their own strong musical character.
The soundtrack becomes darker as the adventure progresses. “Danger,” “The Dark Star,” “Steel and Snare,” “The Curse” and “The Oracle” use heavier rhythms, darker harmonies and more unusual sound combinations to create a sense of danger and uncertainty. The final part of the score includes emotional pieces such as “I Won’t Forget” and “One of Them is Hope,” followed by the climactic “Meridian Dance.”
The soundtrack also contains a large number of short jingles and event themes, including menu music, victory cues, item and weapon notifications, Cannon Travel music and the Flammie Drum.
