Playthrough of Disney/Pixar Monsters, Inc., Vicarious Visions’ 2001 Game Boy Color platformer published by THQ. Released alongside Pixar’s hugely successful movie, the game follows Sulley and Mike as they try to return Boo safely to the human world while avoiding the Child Detection Agency and other hazards around Monstropolis. It is a fairly traditional licensed platformer, but the two playable characters and varied objectives give it a little more personality than many similar movie tie-ins of the era.

Rating: 6/10

The adventure begins in Sulley’s apartment, which functions as a tutorial, before moving through locations inspired by the film such as the Monsters, Inc. factory, children’s bedrooms, the streets of Monstropolis and the Himalayas. There are around 15 levels in total, and objectives vary between stages. Some require reaching an exit, while others involve collecting missing paperwork, finding specific items or scaring a required number of children.

Sulley and Mike have noticeably different abilities. Sulley is the stronger character and can push objects, hang from ledges and smash through certain barriers. His roar can also frighten enemies and children. Mike is smaller and more agile, with a useful double jump and the ability to crawl through narrow spaces. He can also throw Blort cans at enemies. Some levels restrict you to a particular character, while others allow you to switch between them, giving the game more mechanical variety than a standard single-character platformer.

The controls are generally responsive and easy to understand. Both characters feel distinct without being difficult to handle, and the game is clearly designed with younger players in mind. Unfortunately, the level design does not always take full advantage of their abilities. Much of the gameplay still comes down to straightforward jumping, moving boxes, collecting objects and searching relatively large areas for whatever the current objective requires.

This becomes increasingly repetitive as the game progresses. Backtracking can also become tedious when an important item has been missed, especially because some environments look quite similar from one section to another. The difficulty is initially very forgiving, but later stages become noticeably more demanding and occasionally require surprisingly precise jumps.

Visually, Monsters, Inc. is one of the stronger licensed games on the Game Boy Color. Sulley and Mike are immediately recognizable, with large and colourful sprites that animate well for the hardware. The backgrounds also do a respectable job of recreating the industrial look of Monsters, Inc. and the brighter environments from the movie. There is some repeated scenery, but overall the presentation is impressive for a late-generation GBC release.

The sound is less memorable. The music is functional and occasionally catchy, but the small selection of effects becomes repetitive fairly quickly. Sulley’s roar in particular is heard often enough that it can become irritating during longer stages.

Progress is handled through passwords rather than a battery-backed save system. It works, but having to record a password instead of simply saving the game feels unnecessarily dated for a 2001 release.

Disney/Pixar Monsters, Inc. is ultimately a competent but unremarkable platformer. The different abilities of Sulley and Mike, colourful graphics and reasonably varied objectives give it more depth than the average licensed handheld game, but repetitive collecting, backtracking and uneven late-game difficulty prevent it from becoming anything special. Fans of the movie should still find an enjoyable enough Game Boy Color adventure here.
