We all live next to a variable star. The Sun changes from day to day, from week to week, from year to year, even from decade to decade. These changes often take the form of colossal solar storms that are powered by magnetic energy and that pose increasing hazards to our technological society.
However, there is striking regularity in the apparent chaos of space weather—the frequency and severity of solar storms rises and falls approximately every 11 years. This is known as the Solar Cycle and it has been occurring for at least 10,000 years, and likely much longer.
In this presentation we explore how humanity has come to learn about the Solar Cycle and its earthly impacts through careful observation and inference that has spanned over 2000 years. Will will also discuss remaining mysteries, spectacles, and hazards that may await us as we approach yet another solar maximum.

![NOAA Releases Updated 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook
Due to current ocean and atmospheric conditions, such as record-warm sea surface temperatures, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center—a division of the National Weather Service—has increased their prediction for the ongoing 2023 Atlantic hurricane season to an “above normal” level of activity from a “near normal” level with their most recent update.
The outlook now includes a 70% chance of 14-21 named storms, of which 6-11 could become hurricanes, and 2-5 could become major hurricanes. The updated outlook also states that current conditions are likely to counterbalance the usually limiting atmospheric conditions associated with the ongoing El Niño event.

![NOAA’s JPSS-2 Satellite Prepares for Launch
On August 19, the JPSS-2 satellite arrived by transport truck to the Vandenberg Space Force Base in Lompoc, Calif., where it will spend its final weeks on Earth before its planned November 1 launch.
Once launched, the satellite, like its predecessors Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20, will orbit the Earth from the North pole to South pole, sending back data that is critical to the weather forecasts. When you open the weather app on your smartphone, you’ll be using JPSS-2 data.
It will capture images and take measurements that help us plan for severe weather, such as hurricanes, floods and snowstorms. It will measure our ocean and atmosphere, map and monitor wildfires and volcanoes and tell us about the things that fill our air, like dust and smoke. It will provide important climate data on ozone and atmospheric temperature. Because of its wide swath, it will observe every spot on Earth at least twice a day.

![Typhoon Mawar Barrels Across the North Pacific
As Typhoon Mawar (also called Betty in the Philippines) has been making its way across the North Pacific, NOAA satellites, along with satellites operated by our international partners, have been carefully tracking the storm.
Mawar is the second named storm and the first typhoon of the 2023 Pacific typhoon season. So far, Mawar is one of the strongest tropical cyclones in the Northern Hemisphere on record that occurred in the month of May as well as the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide this year so far.
