Why did the Hohokam build Sears-Kay Ruins on a hill above the Sonoran Desert? This Arizona history documentary explores the ancient village near Cave Creek, its stone room foundations, strategic setting and the unusual rounded structure known as the Mystery Room.
Sears-Kay was occupied nearly 1,000 years ago. As we explore the site, we examine what its elevated position may reveal about visibility, community planning, changing access to resources and possible defense—while recognizing that the exact reasons remain uncertain.
The journey begins with a brief motorcycle ride from Phoenix into the Tonto National Forest, followed by the trail to the ruins. The main focus is the archaeology and history of Sears-Kay: how the village was arranged, what daily life may have looked like, why one room differs from the others and why the community was eventually left behind.

The archaeological site was abandoned, but the people and traditions connected to ancient communities of the Salt and Gila River valleys did not simply vanish. Their histories continue through descendant communities, including the Akimel O’odham, Tohono O’odham and Piipaash.
