This machine was a wedding gift to my wife when we got married in 1982. The back half is all cast iron. The front half is plastic. I took it apart to clean and oil it and all the internal parts are metal except for the fly wheel gears, which are a high grade plastic of some sort.
Here I do a jeans hem and sew 4 layers of leather. I am impressed with the power of the machine; i am also impressed with the height of the presser foot.
If you can find one at a garage sale or on Craigslist I would recommend picking it up. It is great for sewing heavier weight fabrics where you modern machine may struggle. No since is abusing your electronic machine if you can pick one of these up for $20 to $40.

This video is about how I slowed down the Singer Heavy Duty Series USA Versions I own.
PLEASE NOTE! This could possibly VOID your warranty. And since you are dealing with electricity then do so at your own risk as making a mistake can injure or it could even KILL YOU. You will want to UNPLUG YOUR machine before making any changes.
I reached out to Sewing Parts Online to find out which foot pedal they offered that allowed you to slow down the speed using the technique I presented in this video. If you order it please let us all know the results. Here is a link to it: [I removed the link - see note below]
UPDATE: I ordered this pedal and it DID NOT have the ability to adjust the speed.

Sorry for my sloppy clothing. I was recording this just before bedtime as often that is when I have time to create these videos after being asking by something that is having an issue. Hopefully, you will find it of some use. Slow down the Singer Heavy Duty Series on some USA Versions](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Kgxf2OXfxro/mqdefault.jpg)
