On October 25, 2011, Jessica Buchanan, who was working as the Education Advisor for a nongovernmental organization, was forcefully taken hostage by a group of Somali pirates while on a normal field mission in Somalia. She was held captive for a total of 93 days. Jessica was compelled to stay outdoors in extremely unpleasant conditions, deprived of food, and subjected to fear by over twenty gangsters. As a result, her health progressively declined until she was rescued on January 25, 2012, by a seal team at the directive of President Obama. Jessica has been recognized as one of the “150 Women Who Will Shake the World” by Newsweek, and her tale was the most widely watched segment of 60 Minutes to date. Jessica is a renowned motivational speaker who is in high demand. Her TEDx Pearl Street talk, titled “Change is Your Proof of Life”, serves as the basis for her global travels, where she inspires audiences to tap into their resilience by recognizing their own independence and opportunity amid significant life-altering experiences. Jessica serves as a family liaison volunteer for the non-profit organization, “Hostage US”, providing support to former hostages and their families throughout their detention and eventual release.

Buchanan’s husband described his wife's period of confinement in Somalia as "a harrowing three-month ordeal." He further revealed that he chose to withhold this information from a significant number of his acquaintances to safeguard her well-being. Following a harrowing three-month ordeal with Somali pirates, his remarkable wife was rescued by American troops and was now secure. Her husband experienced an indescribable sense of delight and relaxation after she was rescued. He expressed gratitude to all those who helped and offered apologies to his pals for withholding information about the ongoing situation. Christina Scolforo, a confidante of Buchanan, asserts that her kidnapping was deliberately concealed from the press. The individuals involved were concerned that any public attention would increase the perceived value of the victim, leading to higher ransom demands and a longer duration of captivity. Therefore, they decided to keep the situation discreet. During the three-month period of her imprisonment, there was increasing worry about Buchanan's declining health, which was deemed potentially life-threatening. Pentagon spokesperson George Little stated that a window of opportunity for the mission to occur had emerged. At that moment, President Obama granted permission for the rescue operation and the team was sent on location.
